FAQ
Where are the PDFs I open stored?
The originals stay where they are. When you add a PDF to Sumipa's desk, a copy is made inside Sumipa (~/Library/Containers/com.sumipa.app/...). The original file is never edited. Sumipa writes a PDF out only when you choose "Save."
Are annotations saved as standard PDF?
Yes. Sumipa uses Apple's PDFKit and saves in the standard PDF annotation format, so files open in Adobe Acrobat or Preview too. Some specialized marks (revision clouds, hatching, custom stamps) keep their appearance while also embedding internal data so Sumipa can re-edit them.
Does it connect to the internet?
No. Everything runs locally on your Mac.
How accurate is OCR?
Sumipa uses Apple's built-in Vision framework. For print-quality scans it gives practical accuracy in both English and Japanese. Handwriting and low-resolution scans may be recognized less reliably.
Can I open PDFs from iCloud Drive / Dropbox?
Yes. A copy is made inside Sumipa to avoid sync conflicts on the cloud side.
Can I sync the same PDF across several Macs?
There is no built-in sync at the moment. Export the PDF and keep it in iCloud Drive / Dropbox to work across machines.
Version history
- v1.0.0 — first release
Known limitations
- Opening a very large number of PDFs (hundreds) at once increases memory use. An improvement is planned for v1.0.1.
- Rotated text displays correctly in Sumipa, but some external PDF viewers may show it in its pre-rotation state.
